G2 Unit 4: Creating movement to a piece of music

Students used their knowledge of the elements of music from their last unit and applied them to movement.  They chose a song and style of dance that they liked and tried to show a variety of movements that fit the music.

Friendships
Talk to your family about who you love to play with and why. What is your favourite place in the playground? What activities or games do you usually like to play? Describe a really fun recess you have had recently and tell them why it was so great.

G2 Music, Unit 3: Composing a song to tell the audience about an idea, feeling or story

Student explored the elements of music, such as tempo, pitch, dynamics and duration, to create a piece of music that would allow the audience to have an idea, feeling or story.  They started to work on this individually and later some students chose to work collaboratively.  Here is their final composition.

G2 Art-Unit 2- Nature and Architecture
We observed shapes in architecture and shapes in nature.  We investigated the functions (purposes) of nature and architecture.  We used our imaginations and feedback from friends or family to draw and build architecture inspired by nature.  Here is my artwork:

G2 Art- Unit 3- Finding and Making Meaning in Abstract Art
We found shapes, colors and lines in abstract artworks.  We discussed our experiences and emotions connected to the colors, lines and shapes.  We used this to guess the meaning of abstract artworks.  We sorted abstract artworks to explore how some are “a little abstract, very abstract or not abstract”.  We also made abstract artworks about ourselves for others to interpret.

Rube Goldberg

Question Prompts for Parents:

Who was Rube Goldberg and what is a Rube Goldberg Machine?
What was the objective or goal of your machine?
Was it successful? Why or why not?
Can you explain the simple machines you used to make it?

'Don't Crack The Egg Challenge'

In writing we are learning to write a procedure. In this example we completed a task related to our unit of inquiry (How the World Works - Simple Machines). We then wrote a procedure demonstrating what we did.
Title: Egg Roulette Challenge
Erika
Introduction: My goal is not to break an egg.

Needs:
  • Ruler
  • Chair
  • Cellotape
  • Paper towels
  • Boiled egg
  • A3 paper
Steps:
  1. Make an inclined plane with a ruler.
  2. Make friction.
  3. Make a wall out of the paper so the egg don’t break.
  4. Make a ramp.
  5. Put paper and paper towels at the end so it won’t roll away.

Evaluation:

I learned that if I put the paper towels at the end of the ruler the egg will not break.

Playground Reflection

Unit: How the World Works - Simple Machines

Here is my drawing of the playground. I made a green screen and explained in my own words about the simple machines I saw.

Teacher Comment: You spoke clearly and explained how the simple machines worked. You used words like force, lever, and push and pull in your presentation. You labelled some of the simple machines correctly in your drawing (pulley, inclined plane), but did not explain this in your presentation. Great try Erika. It was a tricky task!

Clues From The Past- Summative Assessment

Golden urn- Erika

Form

I liked the golden Urn in the Cambodia museum. It was really huge - bigger than a person. It was made of wood, and had copper over the top that was plated in gold and decorated.

Function

An urn is to put the ashes of a dead body in.

During King Sisowath’s rule in Cambodia, he got the urn made. King Sisowath asked them to make it in 1904. It was a special urn for the royal family. When the king died they put his body in the shape of a baby. After 3 months they took out the body and burned it into ashes then put it back. The family of the king also had their ashes in there.

Golden urns come have many sizes and shapes but they are not usually this big because they are just for the ashes. Urns were made from many kind of materials like silver, gold, copper and wood.

How does this help me understand Cambodia ?
The urn is a primary piece of evidence because it was made along time ago and it helps me understand Cambodia culture a lot. Khmer people always burn dead bodies and put ashes in the urn. And they believe the people who die will be born again. It helped me understand the past because  I didn’t know that they like to put the body in a baby position to show that they can be born again. It also shows me that Kings are very important in Cambodia because they had very special urns and funerals.

How We Express Ourselves
Artist Statement - Erika
IMG_7462.jpg
“I chose to do this because painting makes me feel happy. I chose painting an expression - the expression I chose was joy. What inspired me was when my sister was in BISPP she loved to sketch and she inspired me to paint.  I called my work ‘Happy Joy’. I chose the colours because the rainbow colours make me smile. To make it I used a brush, paper, paints and water. They were dye paints.

Favourite Book

"I chose this book because it reminds me of Vietnam when I went there to meet my aunt. The book is in Vietnamese and English. The story is about an old man who wishes his puppet was a real boy. I think the author had to have a good imagination to come up with the idea. "
